This post showcases my development cycle for a personal project. This post is regularly updated with the current progress.

Start of project (5th of February)

For my own development of my skillset, I decided to expand my knowledge of Unreal and its blueprints by creating a survival game.

This game would have the player prepare for a harsh winter by seeking out a tree in a forest to stock up for firewood. Additionally, players would need to forage for food in this same forest.

During this first day of development I created a simple character controller.

My goal is to continue with this project in the future.

The plan is as follows:

-Implement Basic controls

-Implement Search Feature

-Implement Cutting Trees

-Refine prototype

Implementation of raycast detection (12th of February)

To continue with the project I implemented a simple raycast detection for interactable objects. The idea is to have a popup come up when you are looking at a tree. This popup would show the player how much wood the tree would give and how easy it would be to chop down.

To show this popup the tree would first need to be detected, to do this a simple raycast is implemented.

The next step is to implement a popup using the Widget blueprint.

Implementation of the widget blueprint (23rd of February)

After a short break from the project, I worked on implementing the text next to the tree.

For this I created a simple widget blueprint which held onto text which could be changed inside the tree blueprint.

After some hiccups I managed to create a working blueprint where a number would be displayed next to the tree object. This number is currently just a random number, but it would correlate with how much wood the tree could give if chopped down.

As this is mainly in the prototype stage it is simply only a number displayed next to the tree. Later on there will be visuals added.

Taking a break from the project (4th of March)

Unfortunately, due to some personal troubles that take priority over other things, I will not be able to continue working on this project until further notice. This is due to currently having only one day a week free to work on this project.

This project increased my knowledge of how to work with blueprints in Unreal Engine and enabled me to get more familiar with the tools in the Unreal Engine.
